«Guru-art» of the last Kazakh dervish
Bifatima Dualetova (Bifatima-apa)

13.10.2011 – 22.10.2011

Drawings of Sufi dervish from Kazakhstan, performed with felt-tip pen and pen on a white fabric or paper, form the exhibition in Vrublevskaya gallery. The exposition will be complemented by new documentary photos and video materials about the last Kazakh dervish. During her long «periods of drawing» the master fasts.

Phenomenon of the Kazakh dervish. Bifatima-apa is the healer and the master of the Kazakh line of Sufism. The line represents an alloy of Islam with traditions of Central Asia, in a greater degree with shamanism. Settlement Ungurtas in Kazakhstan where Bifatima-apa lives, became the pilgrimage center in the last years. It is included in hajj – ritual worship of sacred places. Hundreds of people come here to meet Bifatima – the founder and the keeper of this place. Sergey Bodrov-the senior and Guka Omarova who first came to Ugurtas as pilgrims dedicated their film "Baksy" to her.

Visit of Bifatima-apa to Moscow. In May, 2010 the exhibition «Last dervish of Kazakhstan» has been shown in Elena Vrublevskaya gallery. For few days which Bifatima-apa spent in the gallery, exhibition space has turned into something like "the branch of Ungurtas". Many visitors constantly communicated with the master, received her advice and blessings. The success of this exhibition has inspired organizers to one more project, but already in the other format.

Tradition presented by the master himself. According to curators – Elena Vrublevskaya and Olesya Bondareva – the important thing for the exhibition is personal participation of Bifatima-apa in it. The best way for actual art is to be perceived in a context of modern life. The same thing is for mystical art - the context is relevant. Pulled out of it and placed in the museum cult objects often lose their sacral properties, turning to relicts. The exhibition of Bifitima Dualetova is the attempt to show ritual art differently, without obvious loss of connection with tradition. It is some kind of "guru-art" when rituals and objects are presented to audience by the master himself. The live context of spiritual tradition is created where the drawings of dervish Bifatima are read authentically.
